August 17-22, 2023
Cambridge Bay (Iqaluktuuttiaq), Nunavut

In August 2023, Ecology North hosted the biannual Young Leaders’ Summit on Northern Climate Change in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. The beginning of the Summit unfortunately coincided with the evacuation order in Yellowknife, which disrupted travel and plans for the week, meaning only 8 of an intended 25 participants were able to attend. The small group however, made for a more intimate experience, which allowed for the free sharing of ideas, challenges, and possible paths toward a more just and livable future.
This was the first Summit hosted in Nunavut, which came with it an opportunity to spend time with Inuit Elders who generously shared traditional knowledge and stories about changes they've witnessed to the land, water, plants, and in their homelands. This intergenerational transfer of knowledge was important for grounding and contextualizing the learning that occurred throughout the week. Participants came away to a deeper understanding of how to approach the future with a sense of resilience and connection to the land, water, air, spirits, animals, and each other.
A big thank you to all of the participants, presenters, guests, volunteers and sponsors who helped make the summit a great success!
