Meet Shailyn, one of the participants that will be joining us for the 2017 Young Leaders' Summit on Northern Climate Change! Age: 28 Home Community: Whitehorse, Yukon Currently working as: the Climate Change Community Liaison at the Council Yukon of First Nations Shailyn's dream job: University Professor Why the issue of climate change is important to Shailyn: "The issue of climate change is important to me because I have been seeing noticeable ecological changes occurring in the Yukon, and I know changes will continue in future years. I find certain aspects of climate change to be particularly interesting, especially the need for adaptive management approaches to address these changes, such as protected areas and range expansions of species. Climate change is front and center in my role at the Council of Yukon First Nations, because I support Yukon (and northern BC) First Nations get their climate change projects off the ground. " Why she decided to apply for the 2017 Summit: "I wanted to apply for the summit because I wanted to expand my knowledge of climate change issues and to learn from other young leaders. I hope that the things I will learn with help me in my current role, and I look forward to broaden my understanding of concerns from other communities across the Canada’s north." A fun fact about Shailyn: She completed her first marathon this summer - the Dempster to Dawson Solstice Race! We can't wait to have Shailyn join us and share her experiences with the group! See you in Whitehorse, August 16th to 22nd, 2017! |
